For over centuries linguists have attempted to look for the characteristics of language from historical and structural perspectives that would establish general principles for language existence. However， such an ambition seems to be an illusion， as these approaches study language without any clear conception of how space and time are incorporated into the integrity of language system. In this subtly argued book， the author puts forward a space-time perspective in linguistics. She offers a theory of how language exists in space and time， and therefore， a theoretical account of the mechanism for language change， which would account both for the totality of language existence and for the reasons language changes.     语言时空观是研究语言的一种根本性的观点。它将时间和空间视为语言系统整体性存在的必要组成部分。在时空观的视界里，时间和空间必然被理解为概念的存在，而且，它们的概念应当是从语言系统整体存在中获得的。以这种观点来认识语言，从时间和空间不断交融的过程重新探索语言及语言流变现象之间的联系，解释语言时空视域之下语言所彰显的流变着的网络状态，并由此抽绎出一种全新的且有张力的研究方法。
