“tom!” no anwer. “tom!” aunt polly looked around the room. “what’ gotten into that boy? he mut be here omewhere.” he pulled her pectacle down on her noe. tom awyer lived with hi aunt polly hi couin mary and hi half brother idney. tom wa alway looking for adventure and getting into trouble and today wa no different. aunt polly looked around the parlor and aid loud enough for the furniture to hear “if i get a hold of you i’ll . . .” there wa a light noie behind her. he turned jut in time to grab a boy darting out of the kitchen cloet. “what have you been doing in there?” “nothing” aid tom. “look at your hand tom! and look at your mouth. what do you have all over you?” tom licked hi li. “i don’t know aunt.” “well i know” aid aunt polly. “it’ jam! haven’t i told you at leat forty time that if you didn’t leave the jam alone i’d kin you?” he ighed. “hand me that witch.” oon the witch hovered in the air. “my! look behind you aunt polly!” aunt polly whirled around. when he did tom fled out the door and over the fence. for a moment aunt polly tood there urpried. then he broke into a laugh. “when will i ever learn? that boy can get my dander up one minute and make me laugh the next.” aunt polly knew tom well and wa ued to hi trick. tom wa her dead iter’ on. aunt polly didn’t have the heart to lah him. “he’ll y hooky thi afternoon” aunt polly mumbled. “i’m going to be obliged to make him work tomorrow a punihment. it’ mighty hard to make him work on aturday but i’ve got to do my duty by him.” tom did y hooky and he had a very good time. at dinner aunt polly aked tom about hi day. he wa hoping to catch him in a lie. “it wa warm in chool today wan’t it tom?” “ye ma’am” tom anwered. “did you want to go wimming?” a bit of a care hot through tom. did aunt polly upect he had yed hooky? “no ma’am” he anwered. aunt polly felt tom’ hirt. it wa dry. tom knew exactly what he’d be reaching for next. “ome of u pumped water on our head. mine’ till damp. ee?” aunt polly wihed he had thought to feel hi damp hair before he offered it up to her. then he had an idea. “you didn’t have to undo your hirt collar to keep it dry did you? unbutton your jacket.” feeling like he had outfoxed hi aunt tom unbuttoned hi jacket. all wa dry. “well i’ll be” aid aunt polly. “i thought for ure you had been wimming.” but idney aid “i thought you ewed hi collar with white thread. it’ black.” “i did ew it with white!” aid aunt polly. but tom didn’t wait for aunt polly to finih. a he went out the door he houted “iddy i’ll get you for that!” that night tom got home. when he climbed in the window aunt polly wa waiting. when he aw the tate of hi clothe he knew he’d be punihed. the next morning came and o did hi punihment. the world wa bright and cheery and brimming with life. the locut tree were in bloom and the fragrance filled the air. tom appeared on the idewalk with a bucket of whitewah and a bruh. before him wa thirty yard of board fence that wa nine feet high. hi cheery pirit deflated. jim the young lave came kipping out of the gate with a pail for water. tom had alway thought bringing water from the town pump wa a chore. but now he didn’t think o. were alway waiting their turn reting tra thing and fighting by the pump. although the pump wa only a 150 yard off it alway took jim at leat an hour to get back. “ay jim” aid tom “i’ll fetch the water if you’ll whitewah ome.” jim hook hi head. “can’t mater tom. mie told me i got to get the water myelf. he aid not to whitewah if you aked me.” “never mind that jim. i’ll only be gone a minute. aunt polly will never know.” jim wavered. “i’ll how you my ore toe” aid tom. jim put down hi pail and bent over tom’ bandaged toe. but a econd later aunt polly appeared waving a lipper in her hand. tom quickly tarted whitewahing a jim went flying down the treet. tom felt mierable. he knew all the boy would oon e along and make fun of him for having to work. the thought burned him like fire. jut when he felt hopele tom got a magnificent idea! he tarted painting the board for all he wa worth. a few minute later ben roger came along preten he wa a teamboat while chewing on an apple. “tingaling” chimed the teamboat. tom paid no attention and went on whitewahing. then tom tepped back to admire hi work. ben aid “got to work huh? i’m going wimming tom. don’t you wih you could e intead of work?” “work?” tom aked confued. “ain’t that work?” aked ben. tom hrugged. “maybe it i maybe it ain’t but it uit tom awyer.” he continued moving the bruh along the board. “doe a boy get a chance to whitewah a fence every day?” ben watched every move tom made. “hey tom why don’t you let me whitewah a bit?” tom conidered for a moment. “nah. aunt polly’ very particular about thi fence. it ha to be perfect. i reckon there’ only one boy—maybe two—in a thouand that could do it the right way.” “really?” aked ben. “oh tom you jut have to let me. i’d let you if it were me.” tom hook hi head. “aunt polly wouldn’t let jim or id do it. if anything happened to it . . .” “oh huck i’ll be careful. let me try” begged ben. “i’ll give you the core of my apple.” tom proteted. “i’ll give you all of my apple” aid ben. tom gave up hi bruh with a twinkle in hi eye. a he at and munched on the apple tom prepared to trick more . every once in a while a boy would e along and laugh at the work to be done. but they’d alway end up whitewahing! by the day’ end tom had traded the chance of whitewahing for a kite a dead rat tadpole and a piece of chalk. he alo got a dog collar—with no dog—a kitten with one eye the handle of a knife four piece of orange peel a tin oldier twelve marble a pool and a key. tom had a nice tah of treaure and the fence had three coat of whitewah on it! if he hadn’t run out of whitewah he would have bankrupted every boy in the village.
