WalterScottwasborninEdinburghin1771.Educatedforthelaw,heobtainedtheofficeofsheriff-deputeofSelkirkshirein1799andin1806theofficeofclerkofsession,apostwhosedutieshefulfilledforsometwenty-fiveyears.HislifelonginterestinScottishantiquityandtheballadswhichrecordedScottishhistoryledhimtotryhishandatnarrativepoemsofadventureandaction.TheLayoftheLastMinstrel(1805),Marmion(1808),andTheLadyoftheLake(1810)madehisreputationasoneoftheleadingpoetsofhistime.Anovel,Waverley,whichhehadbegunin1805,waspublishedanonymouslyin1814.Subsequentnovelsappearedwiththenote“bytheauthorofWaverley”;hencehisnovelsoftenarecalledcollectively“theWaverleynovels.”SomeofthemostfamousoftheseareOldMortality(1816),RobRoy(1817),Ivanhoe(1819),Kenilworth(1821),andQuentinDurward(1823).InrecognitionofhisliteraryworkScottwasmadeabaronetin1819.Duringhislastyearsheheldvariousofficialpositionsandpublishedbiographies,editionsofSwiftandDryden,tales,lyricpoetry,andvariousstudiesofhistoryandantiquity.Hediedin1832.
