作者简介
刘春芳，1970年7月出生，博士，教授，硕士生导师，研究方向：英美文学及西方文论。2009年毕业于东北师范大学外国语学院，获博士学位，2023年入职上海海事大学。曾受国家留学基金委等资助于2013年和2014年赴美访学。近年来，主持国家社科基金项目2项，博士后科学基金1项。在《外国文学评论》、《外国文学》、《外国文学研究》、《社会科学战线》等期刊发表论文30余篇；在国内外知名出版社出版合作专著3部。

1.TheStoryofPangu
Beforetheuniversewasborn,therewasabsolutelynothingbutchaoticdarkness.Overthecourseof18,000earthyears,thechaosswirledandgatheredintotheshapeofanegg.Theopposingforcesofyinandyangintheeggconstantlybattledandfoughtwithoneanotheruntilfinally,theyachievedbalance.Panguwasformedfromthisfirstunionofyinandyang.WhenPanguwassleepingintheeggthatheldallthematterandforcesoftheuniverse,therewassolittlespacethathehadtocurluphisbodytofitinsideofit.Pangu’sname,therefore,denotesbothhisancientnessandtheunusualcircumstancesofhisbirth.
Pangu,suddenlyawarethathewasstuckinatinyspacewithnoroomtomove,couldn’tbearhowstuffyitwasandwriggledandwritheduntilsuddenly—crack!Theeggsplitintotwohalvesandtheeggs’whitesandyolkleakedout.Thelightandfluffywhitesfloatedupwardsandbecametheclouds,sky,andstarswhiletheheavy,denseyolkssunkdownwardsandbecamethe
earth.Toavoidbeingtrappedbetweentheskyandearth,Panguneededtokeepyinandyangseparatefromeachother.Usingonlyhisarms,Panguraisedtheskyabovehishead,butonlyjustbarely.Overthecourseof18,000years,Pangugrewthreefeettallerandtheearthtenfeetthickereverydayuntiltheskyandtheearthendedupwheretheyarenow.AfterPangufinishedgrowing,hedied,andhisfourlimbsbecamethepillarsthatwouldholdupthesky.Hislefteyedriftedupoutofhisbodyandbecamethesunwhilehisrighteyebecamethemoon.Pangu’sfleshmeltedoffhisbodyandbecamerich,arablesoil.Hisarteriesbecamedeepravinesandcanyonsandhisbloodpouredoutofhisbodyandbecametheriversthatwouldfillthem.Hishairfelloffhisheadandfloatedupwardstobecomethestars.Pangu’steethandbonesturnedintometalsandpreciousstones.
2.TheStoryofNüwa
NüwaisapopularChinesegoddessassociatedwithfertilityandmarriage.
Theworldofthefirstbeingswasverydifferentfromoursnow.Theearthwasjustinitsinfancyandwasonlyseparatedfromtheskybyfourverylargepillars.Oneday,Gonggong,thegodofwater,andthegodoffire,Zhurongbecamelockedinamassivebattlethatwoulddeterminetherulerofheaven.Wildfiresragedandfloodsplaguedthecountryside.Gonggong,whowasmotivatedbyevil,ultimatelylostthefight.GonggongwassoangeredthathebashedhisheadagainstBuzhoumountain—oneofthefourpillarsholdinguptheheavens.Theearthbegantotremble,andthepillarcollapsedandrippedaholeinthesky.Fireshadscorchedtheearth;waterwaspouringincessantlyfromtheholeinthesky.Seeinghowherchildrenweresuffering,Nüwaimmediatelysprangtoaction.Shewenttotheskyturtle,Ao,andbeggedhimtograntheramiracletosaveherchildren.SheusedAo’slegstoreplacethefourbrokenpillarsallthewhileholdinguptheskywithherbackwhilerainpoureddownuponher.ThepillarsofHeavenwerebrokenandthecornersoftheearthgaveway.HereuponNüwameltedstonesofthefivecolours
torepairtheheavens.Gatheringtheashesofreedsshestoppedthefloodingwaters,andthusrescuedtheland.Aftershewasdone,shewassotiredthatshelaiddowntorestanddiedfromexhaustion.
Althoughshedidherbest,Nüwacouldn’tgettheskyandearthtoalignexactlythewayithadbefore.Theearthbecamepermanentlytiltedandthat’swhyit’ssaidthatalloftheriversinChinaruninaSoutheasterndirection.
