Theworldofthefirstbeingswasverydifferentfromoursnow.Theearthwasjustinitsinfancyandwasonlyseparatedfromtheskybyfourverylargepillars.Oneday,Gonggong,thegodofwater,andthegodoffire,Zhurongbecamelockedinamassivebattlethatwoulddeterminetherulerofheaven.Wildfiresragedandfloodsplaguedthecountryside.Gonggong,whowasmotivatedbyevil,ultimatelylostthefight.GonggongwassoangeredthathebashedhisheadagainstBuzhoumountain—oneofthefourpillarsholdinguptheheavens.Theearthbegantotremble,andthepillarcollapsedandrippedaholeinthesky.Fireshadscorchedtheearth;waterwaspouringincessantlyfromtheholeinthesky.Seeinghowherchildrenweresuffering,Nüwaimmediatelysprangtoaction.Shewenttotheskyturtle,Ao,andbeggedhimtograntheramiracletosaveherchildren.SheusedAo’slegstoreplacethefourbrokenpillarsallthewhileholdinguptheskywithherbackwhilerainpoureddownuponher.ThepillarsofHeavenwerebrokenandthecornersoftheearthgaveway.HereuponNüwameltedstonesofthefivecolours torepairtheheavens.Gatheringtheashesofreedsshestoppedthefloodingwaters,andthusrescuedtheland.Aftershewasdone,shewassotiredthatshelaiddowntorestanddiedfromexhaustion.
