Chapter 1 Conspectus of Disease
W ang Jianzhi
In this chapter,we will discuss from a generalview the concept, etiology, pathogenesis and out·come of disease.
Disease 1s referred as aberrant manifestation ofderegulated homeostasis caused by hamfful agents. The development of a disease is definitely a patho-logic process with a characteristic set of signs andsymptoms involved in the whole body or any of itsparts. For instance, pituitary diseases are disorders0f the anterior or posterior pituitary gland which USU-ally manifest it$hypersecretion or hyposecretion ofpituitary hormones.Pituitary mass lesions may alsocompress or affect the optic chiasma and other ad_a.cent structures and thus cause relevant disorders.Disease reflects an opposite situation of health.Health used to be defined as the state of the organ.i8m when it functions optimally without evidence ofdisease.Recently, the deftnition of health fromWodd Health Organization(WHO)emphasizes thatheallh indicates not only without any evidence ofdisease, but also a state of complete well.beingphysically, mentally and socially
Additionally.there is a situation.in which theperson does not show specific symptoms and signs ofdisease, but lives a low—quality of life both physical·ly and mentally;this is called“sub·health”.Another concept needs to emphasize here is“bas—ic pathological process”,which indicates some corn—mon and collective pathological alterations presentedin a group of diseases. For example, inflammation isa basic pathological process for various infectiousdiseases, such as arthritis,pneumonia,etc.,and80 does for hypoxia,stress,edema,acidosis,and50 on.For some diseases, the etiology, pathology, path—ogenesis and prognosis are still unknown at present. Therefore。scientific research aimed to explore themechanism of diseases and thus to develop effective
