【作者简介】
Walt Whitman (1819～1892) was born on Long Island and educated in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a printer?s devil, journeyman compositor, itinerant schoolteacher, and newspaper editor.

　　沃尔特·惠特曼（Walt Whitman，1819——1892），美国现代诗歌之父，美国历史上最伟大的诗人之一。惠特曼出生于纽约长岛一个贫穷的农民家庭．他的一生颇为坎坷。只读过几年小学。为了谋求生计，先后从事过排字工人、小学教师、新闻工作者、地方报纸编辑、木工、泥水匠等各种工作。 

　　惠特曼从1839年起开始文学创作，写一些短诗，同时参加当地的政治活动。先后担任《纽约曙光》、 《布洛克林每日鹰报》、 《自由民报》的编辑、主编，终因政见不合而于1840年离开新闻界。 

　　从1850年起，惠特曼一面从事体力劳动，一面展开了他的诗歌创作。其代表作品是他的第一部诗集《草叶集》。惠特曼创造了独具一格的自由体诗，这种风格的诗以民主的内容、革新的形式极大地影响了美国乃至世界诗坛。 

　　1873年，惠特曼不幸患半身不遂症，迁居新泽西州卡姆登养病。1892年，惠特曼病重去世。
