Its companies are known far and wide. But far less is known about its culture and society and even its politics, aside from the fact that after several dictatorships it now has a very vigorous democracy.

How all of this came about is explained in this second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea, now in its second edition. This book goes far back in history, indeed, to the prehistoric period in the chronology, which traces its many metamorphoses until it finally did become the Republic of Korea. A lengthy introduction provides a closer look at this history, describing and also explaining it. More information is provided in hundreds of dictionary entries on significant persons, places, events and institutions, and yes, the military, but also its political parties. Relations with North Korea and allies like the United States and also the United Nations, round this out. So this book is certainly a good place to get started and further reading can be found in the bibliography.

This dictionary presents a balanced and objective view of South Korea, providing a long perspective and covering varied aspects of South Korean life. Domestic, political, and social events, foreign affairs, economic and cultural developments, and the men and women who have influenced the country's history are reviewed in the more than 400 entries, many of which are new or have been updated from the first edition. The dictionary's chronology and historical narrative, also updated, cover the entire history of Korea for the benefit of readers who have little or no knowledge of the overall history of the Korean people. The extensive bibliography has been updated to include the most current and best books, journals, and websites, making this a valuable reference source for the scholar, student, and general reader.

A founder of Korean studies in the United States, Nahm is the right person to undertake this reference project. In addition to an alphabetical listing of important persons, institutions, laws, events, etc., this dictionary contains several other valuable reference resources: a 53-page chronology; a 55-page introductory essay on Korean history and people; a 57-page bibliography that covers cultural, literary, and religious topics as well as history; and numerous maps and charts. The dictionary listing itself is useful and accurate but is strong mainly in the area of politics and international affairs; even then readers will be disappointed to find no entry for an item such as "KAL 007." Economics is largely ignored, and the author concedes that space concerns obliged him to exclude cultural, scientific, and business leaders. The book's limitations make it only marginally useful to Asian history scholars; this will be of more value in reference collections in college libraries.

About the Author：
ANDREW C. NAHM, who wrote the first edition, was one of the leading authorities on Korea, founding and directing the Center for Korean Studies at Western Michigan University. He has written or edited numerous works including Introduction to Korean History and Culture, Korean History, and Korea: Tradition and Transformation – A History of the Korean People.

JAMES E. HOARE, who produced the second edition, was a member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1969 to 2003. Among his many postings, he served at the British Embassy in Seoul as well as those in Pyongyang and Beijing. Since retirement, he has been teaching at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and writing on Japan and the Koreas, this including books such as Korea an Introduction and Conflict in Korea. He is also the co-author of the Historical Dictionary of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
