The commission was to design two largeadjacent housing sites in Oakwood.Houses are arranged along the lanesrunning north-south through the site,terminating at the retained woodlandedge in a row of bollards. Each lanecontains no more than 35 houses, eachwith its own front garden and front gate.Standardised timber frame techniqueswere used to economise on constructiontime and cost. Rather than the simplerepetitive plans of the Maunsel schemes(see page 36), a concept of "universalcore" (the main service, circulation, andliving spaces of the house) was developed,common to all house types. Variationin size and character was then achievedby the addition of extensions in definedzones at the front and rear of each house,the aim being to encourage tenants toextend, adapt, and decorate their ownhouse, with traditional decorativesuburban elements such as trellis, porch,store and patio.
