Alfred Schnittke as a film composer - this is known to everyone who has dealt with Alfred Schnittke, but only very few are familiar with his film music oeuvre. All the more astonishing, because on the one hand Alfred Schnittke composed more than 60 film scores between 1961 and 1984, and on the other hand his polystylistic techniques found an almost ideal equivalent in film. Since Alfred Schnittke, like many contemporary composers in the USSR, suffered from artistic regimentation and his works could often only be performed under difficult conditions, his work for film contributed significantly to his livelihood.

musik-forum-online.de 11/2006: "It is highly informative to get to know a selection of Alfred Schnittke's film music in a CD series published by the Capriccio label. Frank Strobel, who conducts the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin in the recordings, was still personally acquainted with Alfred Schnittke and received the right of arrangement for his film compositions from him. The second CD of this edition, which is designed for further growth, presents excerpts from stylistically quite varied music for four films released between 1968 and 1976.to Clowns and Children by Alexander Mitta and The Waltz by Viktor Titov, Schnittke wrote subject-related music that is cheerful, light, interspersed with direct quotations and copies of styles, and imaginatively takes up traditional dance characters, but also took the opportunity to use more advanced artistic devices in a section titled "The Factory" in the footsteps of Mossolov's early Soviet iron foundry."
