WalterBenjaminwasbornonJuly15,1892toaGerman-JewishfamilyinBerlin.HewaseducatedattheAlbertLudwigUniversityinFreiburgandtheFriedrichWilhelmUniversityinBerlin.AnessayonGoethe'sElectiveAffinitiespublishedin1924earnedhimswiftrecognitionbuthestruggledtofindapositiontosupporthimselfandbuildonitssuccess.WhentheNaziscametopowerin1933,BenjaminfledtoParisandbecameaprominentcriticofHitler'sregime.Duringthisperiodheworkedonhisimmensestudyof19thcenturyParisianlifeknownasTheArcadesProject(whichwasposthumouslypublishedinunfinishedform).FollowingtheNaziinvasionofFranceBenjaminattemptedtoescapetotheUnitedStateswhereavisahadbeenobtainedforhim.TryingtogetthroughtoneutralPortugal,BenjaminwaspreventedfromcrossingtheSpanishborderandcommittedsuicideonSeptember271940.AmitChaudhuriisanovelist,poet,criticandmusician.
