精彩内容 SSAT Upper Level Reading 第 1 篇 Kangaroo Rats Many mammals have unique ways of adapting to the climate in which they live. Some of the best examples are animals that live in the desert, where water is scarce. One of the most interesting desert mammals is the kangaroo rat of the southwestern United States. This tiny creature sleeps underground in a burrow by day and so escapes the sun’s heat. Kangaroo rats studied in captivity have been known to live for long periods, without drinking, on a diet of dry seeds. The amount of water in these seeds is very small, but the kangaroo rat’s body wastes none. It has no sweat glands, and any moisture in the breath is condensed inside the nostrils and passes back into the body to be used again. ● Vocabulary Unique 的 ADJ different from everything else; special adapt (使)适应 V change something to make it fit captivity 囚禁,监禁 N the state of being kept as a prisoner or in a confined space diet 日常饮食 N the usual food and drink of a person or animal condense (使)浓缩;(使)凝结 V to make smaller; to become liquid ● Background Information Kangaroo rats, small rodents of genus Dipodomys, are native to western North America.
