作者简介
初汉平，原青岛海洋大学外国语学院教授。精通英语、俄语。语言基础坚实，知识渊博。曾担任校教学评估专家委员和《高教研究》编委工作，发表有关语言理论和教学方法的论文近十篇。退休后进入美国社会生活，并受邀主持华人活动中心的英语教学工作。

本书作者根据自己的亲身经历，将其在美国生活的场合和情景按照主题编排成英语日常会话手册，内容包括打电话、购物、在公寓、去医院、去银行等，丰富而实用，有助于学习者轻松交流、轻松生活。
精彩内容
这本会话集是我十几年来在美国美京华人活动中心和彩虹老人中心讲授英语会话使用的教材。
二十世纪八十年代中国兴起留。潮流中，儿子来美读研，毕业后留美工作，成家生子。为照顾再下一代，老伴和我来到美国。孙辈入学前班后，我们移居老年公寓，进入美国社会生活。
我在国内有四十年高校外语教学的经历。进入美国社会后不久，我受邀担任华人活动中心的英语教学工作，使用《朗文国际英语教程》作教材讲授基础英语。授课期间，学友们要求增加中老年人英语会话的内容，帮助他们解决日常生活听说英语困难的问题。当时已有的英语会话教材多半是为拉丁裔移民生活和工作编写的教材，缺少适合老年人，特别是华裔中老年人的内容，因此我决定根据自己的亲身经历把我在美国生活的各种场合和情景下和美国人接触中听到的和说过的话语写下来，按照主题编成教材，逐篇发给大家。单篇材料容易散失，积累多了，学友要求装订成册,于是我把这些材料加以编排，重新打印，学友帮助装订，成为本书第一次成册的教材。由于这本书的内容基本上是真人，实地，实事，颇受学友的欢迎，连续使用到2013年。
2013年我已年过八十五岁，不能再站台讲课了。停教以后，不少学友向我索取这本书。当我告诉他们已无存书，使用需要复印时，他们问我是否有将此书出版的计划。他们说：这本书很实用；书中有他们的生活；书中可以找到他们需要的日常英语会话材料；学习它丰富了他们的生活，锻炼了他们的头脑。这些话对我是很大的鼓励，使我想到要尽力而为，像一只老蜜蜂，再酿几滴蜜，供献给我的同胞和需要它的人。
本书出版应当感谢许多人：首先是感谢多年来支持，鼓励和帮助我的众多的学友；感谢和我风雨相依，护理照顾我近六十年的老伴杨兰生；感谢好友Paul Myron博士，老伴的英语老师 Barbara Young，和公寓经理Mary Lou ，他们对本书的文稿做过审阅和订正；感谢好友于有生，他替我打印了全部文稿。谢谢大家。
