Intercultural Communication introduces the major principles of in terculturalcommunication and demonstrates these principles in action by exploring differences in perception, world views, values, and verbal and nonver balmessages. The book also includes current examples and concrete strategies for improving intercultural communication. The book is divided into eight chapters.
Chapter 1 seeks to describe the rationale for studying in tercultural communication and introduces the chronological development of in terculturalcommunication, the factors leading to the development of interculturalcommunication, and the purposes of studying intercultural communication.
Chapter 2 deals with the discussion of two fundamental concepts,culture and cultural patterns. The basic components of cultural patterns:beliefs, values, norms and so practices are explained. And a generaloverview of cultural orientations is made. Finally the relationship between cultural patterns and intercultural competence is explained.
Chapter 3 touches upon cultural context. It focuses on the discussion ofthree dimensions of cultural variability that are useful for understandingcultural differences. The topics such as high- and low-context cultures,individualism-collectivism, and value orientation are explored.
