《中国园林》从中国文化的角度出发，阐述了园林的本身特色及所承载的文化意蕴；又从中国园林与其他国家及地区园林的比较中显示出了中国园林所承载的文化含义及其象征。其中本书最有特色的是第五章《引人入胜——中国园林审美》，从意境的角度解析了园林的审美方法及审美感受。并选取日本、西方（主要是欧洲）以及伊斯兰的园林与中国园林作了一番比较，在比较中再次彰显了中国园林的独特之处。
