作者简介
丁往道（1924—2010），我国有名语言学家、翻译家。1946年毕业于四川大学外语系，1950年起在北京外国语学校英语系任教。长期从事写作和文体教学研究及中国文化的译介。编写有《当代英文散文选读》《英语文体学引论》《英语写作手册》等。

刚、毅、木、讷子曰：“刚、毅、木、讷近仁。”（13.27）白话译文：孔子说：“刚强、坚定、质朴、寡言这四种品格接近仁德。”BeingFirm,Resolute,SimpleandReticentConfuciussaid,“Beingfirm,resolute,simpleandreticentisclosetobeinghumane.”(13.27)和为贵有子曰：“礼之用，和为贵。先王之道，斯为美，小大由之。有所不行，知和而和，不以礼节之，亦不可行也。”（1.12）白话译文：有子说：“礼的实行，以达到人们和谐相处为可贵。过去圣王治国之道的好处就在这里，无论大事小事都以和谐为准。但是也有行不通的地方，只知道要和谐，不用礼来调节，是行不通的。”TheRitesandHarmonyYouzisaid,“Themostvaluableuseoftheritesistoachieveharmony.Inharmonyliesthemostbeautifulofthewaysoftheformersage-kings.Whethertheydealtwithimportantorunimportantthings,theystartedfromharmony.Buttheremaybeplaceswherethisprincipledoesnotwork:pursuingharmonybecauseoneknowsofitwithoutregulatingitwiththeritesisnotfeasible.”(1.12)
