【作者简介】

　　威廉.H.麦加菲（William H.McGuffey），1800-1873，美国著名教育家。1826年毕业于华盛顿大学杰斐逊学院。在数十年的教育生涯中，他先后担任过迈阿密大学语言学教授、俄亥俄大学校长、弗吉尼亚大学哲学教授。

　　19世纪初期的美国，中小学教育还很落后，当时麦加菲意识到应该给广大青少年，尤其是那些家庭条件艰苦的孩子提供普遍教育，于是他前后花二十多年时间，为孩子们编写了这套教材。

　　麦加菲编写的这套教材共7册，包括学龄前启蒙读本到小学六年级。这套教材面世后，在一个多世纪的时间里，成为美国小学的首选教材，其销量超过了1.3亿套，因而美国《出版周刊》在评选“人类出版史上最畅销的10本书”时，将其列为第三位。

　　直到今天，这套教材仍然在西方国家流行，成为对美国青少年精神道德培养产生深远而巨大影响的经典读本。
