《西方翻译理论文献选读》分为上下两篇，共二十个单元，二十篇文献。上篇为“总论”，收综述性文献三篇；下篇为“分论”，以年代为线索，结合思想流派，围绕西方翻译理论从早期的零散经验之谈上升到系统的理论，进而出现朦胧的学科意识，直至发展成为一门独立学科的历史进程这一核心问题，精心挑选了十七篇具有代表性的文献。上、下两篇分别配以导论，每个单元则除了选文之外，还编写了选文导读、注释、讨论题和思考题、拓展阅读书目等内容。
《西方翻译理论文献选读》是作者顿官刚多年从事翻译理论研究和教学的结晶，其主要部分作为“文献研究”课程的讲义使用了七年，并根据情况进行了修订，无论教材还是课程都收到了预期效果；②《西方翻译理论文献选读》是一本理论性的教材，其内容跨越整个西方翻译史，涵盖西方翻译理论的主要流派，其编写方法以史为纲，以流派为线索，先“总论”后“分论”，编、注、述、论结合，使之不同于一般的翻译教材，也有别于通常的翻译理论或翻译史编著；③《西方翻译理论文献选读》是一个“读者友好”（readersfriendly）的读本，书中提供的导论、导读、注释、讨论题和思考题、拓展阅读书目等，均针对读者和使用者的实际需要；④《西方翻译理论文献选读》代表了一种关于文献阅读方法的理念，那就是：先综述、概览，再专人、专论；先选读，再全文：先中文，再外文；先阅读，再回应（respond，包括写摘要和评述，写读书报告和参加读书报告会，回答思考题，参加讨论或辩论，等等）。
《西方翻译理论文献选读》可用作英语专业翻译学方向硕士研究生或本科生高年级“文献研究”课程的教材，也可供有相当程度的翻译理论研究爱好者使用。
