The Chinese is one of the most mysterious and intriguing cultures in the world. Their history, dating back over five thousand years ago, includes bloody conflicts that nearly ended the nation’s existence on earth. However, China has not only miraculously survived, but it has also grown stronger.
Today, China continues to be a leading nation in economic productivity, science, and technology. For the Chinese, the secret to their survival and prosperity in the midst of chaos lies in its unique history, its colorful culture, and its beautiful mélange of over fifty ethnic minorities. These attributes all form the foundation of a complex knowledge system based on astronomy, geography, medicine, military, literature, and arts. Not surprisingly, the most defining characteristic of Chinese people is the wise and philosophical way they innately think and reason.
To understand the Chinese, one must first understand their history. This book aims to promote a clearer understanding of who the Chinese people are, what their culture looks like, and how they think. This book includes ten stories that have long been part of the Chinese cultural fabric. The main characters of these stories range from everyday peasants and teachers to business men and military officers. Even though they had different occupations, all of them used their courage and wisdom to resolve dangerous situations and ultimately protected their people and country. Many of the main characters, like Mulan and Kong Ming, have been household names for many generations of Chinese.
Above all, we hope that these engaging stories about the heroes of Chinese history will help readers to appreciate the wisdom that Chinese people use to resolve complex problems and overcome costly conflicts. In today’s globalized world, valuable elements in one nation’s culture can become the wealth of all cultures if we are all willing to communicate with and understand each other. Any differences in history, culture, language, and way of thinking between the east and the west can become the solid foundation upon which friendships can be built, solidified, and strengthened.

The Story of Tan Daoji
Secret of the Grains

This story is based on an event that took place in China about 1,500 years ago during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (386-589). It is about how a strategy saved an army. The battlefield is an unpredictable arena where any party can win or lose. But no matter what, an army must protect itself from the enemy. In the case of General Tan Daoji and his army, they faced a life-or-death crisis in more ways than one.
The enemy had been chasing them for days, and their granary had been set on fire. General Tan’s soldiers were very close to starving. To make matters worse, traitors had told the enemy about their food shortage. If General Tan and his army continued to retreat without restoring their food supply, the soldiers would fall into the enemy’s hands.
At this crucial moment, the calm general made a bold decision. He surprised the enemy! Because of the actions of General Tan, the confused enemy hesitated and retreated. The young general was able to take his soldiers home safely.
