AllenGinsbergwasborninNewark,NewJersey,in1926,asonofNaomiandlyricpoetLouisGinsberg.AsastudentatColumbiaCollegeinthe1940s,hebeganaclosefriendshipwithWilliamBurroughs,NealCassady,andJackKerouac,andhelaterbecameassociatedwiththeBeatmovementandtheSanFranciscoRenaissanceinthe1950s.Afterjobsasalaborer,sailor,andmarketresearcher,Ginsbergpublishedhisfirstvolumeofpoetry,HowlandOtherPoems,in1956."Howl"defeatedcensorshiptrialstobecomeoneofthemostwidelyreadpoemsofthecentury,translatedintomorethantwenty-twolanguages,fromMacedoniantoChinese,amodelforyoungergenerationsofpoetsfromWesttoEast.GinsbergwasamemberoftheAmericanAcademyofArtsandLetters,wasawardedthemedalofChevalierdel'OrdredesArtsetdesLettresbytheFrenchministerofculture,wasawinneroftheNationalBookAward(forTheFallofAmerica),andwasacofounderoftheJackKerouacSchoolofDisembodiedPoeticsattheNaropaInstitute,thefirstaccreditedBuddhistcollegeintheWesternworld.HediedinNewYorkCityin1997.
