GeoffreyChaucerwasborninLondonabout1340,thesonofawell-to-doandwell-connectedwinemerchant.In1360,afterhiscapturewhilefightingintheFrenchwars,EdwardIIIpaidhisransom,andlaterChaucermarriedPhilippadeRoet,amaidofhonortothequeenandsister-in-lawtoJohnofGaunt,Chaucer'spatron.

Chaucer'soeuvreiscommonlydividedintothreeperiods:theFrench(to1372),consistingofsuchworksasatranslationoftheRomandelaRoseandTheBookoftheDuchess;theItalian(1372-1385),includingTheHouseofFame,TheParliamentofFowlsandTroilusandCriseyde;andtheEnglish(1385-1400),culminatinginTheCanterburyTales.In1400,hedied,leaving24oftheapparently120taleshehadplannedforhisfinalmasterpiece.ChaucerbecamethefirstofEngland'sgreatmentobeburiedinthePoet'sCornerofWestminsterAbbey.
