MaryAnnEvanswasbornonNovember22,1819,atChilversCoton,Warwickshire,England,thelastchildofanestateagent.Duringhergirlhood,shewentthroughaphaseofevangelicalpiety,butherstronginterestinphilosophyandherfriendshipwithreligiousfreethinkersledtoabreakwithorthodoxreligion.Whenoneofthesefriendsmarriedin1843,MaryAnntookoverfromhiswifethetaskoftranslatingD.F.Strauss'sTheLifeofJesusCriticallyExamined(1846),aworkthathaddeepeffectonEnglishrationalism.Afterherfather'sdeathshesettledinLondonandfrom1851to1854sheservedasawriterandeditoroftheWestminsterReview,theorganoftheRadicalparty.InLondonshemetshemetGeorgeHenryLewes,ajournalistandadvancedthinker.Leweswasseparatedfromhiswife,whohadhadtwosonsbyanotherman,buthadbeenunabletoobtainadivorce.InastepdaringforVictoriantimes,MaryAnnEvansbeganlivingopenlywithLewesin1854,inauniontheybothconsideredassacredasalegalmarriageandonethatlasteduntilhisdeathin1878.
WithLewes'sencouragement,MaryAnnEvanswroteherfirstfictionalwork,"TheSadFortunesoftheReverendAmosBarton,"forBlackwood'sMagazinein1857;itwasfollowedbytwomorestoriespublishedunderthepseudonymGeorgeElliot–"George"becauseitwasLewes'snameand"Eliot"because,shesaid,itwasgoodmouth-filling,easilypronouncedword."Attheageofthirty-ninesheusedhermemoriesofWarwickshiretowriteherfirstlongnovel,AdamBede(1859),abookthatestablishedherastheforemostwomannovelistinherday.ThencameTheMillontheFloss(1860),SilasMarner(1861),andRomola(1863).HermasterpieceandoneofthegreatestEnglishnovels,Middlemarch,waspublishedin1871-72.HerlastworkwasDanielDeronda(1876).AfterLewes'sdeathGeorgeEliotmarriedJohnWalterCross.Hewasforty;shewassixty-one.BeforeherdeathonDecember22,1880,shehadbeenrecognizedbyhercontemporariesasthegreatestlivingwriterofEnglishfiction.
