Revenge, betrayal, murder, love, and mystery make Rogue an appealing book to read. The setting is Oregon's valley of the Rogue River during the early 1900s. Joanne, the main character of the story, has come to Oregon to work as a doctor's assistant and is captivated by the untamed beauty of the area and the tough, independent qualities of its people. Reluctantly, she takes on the care of a motherless infant and finds herself the only female living on an isolated ranch. Men of all types live on the ranch or routinely pass through to work or hunt wild game. When one wins her heart, there still seems the possibility that she has made the wrong and, perhaps, dangerous choice. Adding depth to the story is a pertinent quotation concluding each chapter. Collectively, these gems from the ancient to more modern past insert almost an extra character into the story. Like a group of old graybeards looking down from a balcony and remarking upon players on a stage, their comments may foreshadow events, make caustic observation, or merely amuse the reader. Don't miss it!
