The portal from one story to the other is a ventilation shaft from which the cat witnesses the strange and erratic behavior of his enemies, the Diurnal Furless Bipeds, and especially the black boy who believes the black cat gives him musical inspiration. The story takes place in a city in the Deep South during the Depression of the early 1930s.
