The predominant focus of Negotiating Capability and Diaspora is on the Indian economist cum philosopher Amartya Sen s theory of "capability," which rose as a critique of the modern American philosopher John Rawls s theory of "primary goods." The book strives to develop Amartya Sen s theory of "capability" as a leitmotif throughout the book. Thus, I focus on the following themes: 1) how Amartya Sen s theory of "capability" offers strength to the immigrants and the underdogs; 2) how significant is John Rawls s theory as it impacted Amartya Sen s theory of capability; 3) the two aspects of Amartya Sen s theory of capability; one the one hand it exposes the asymmetry and discrepancy between people of power and the powerless because of the lack of resources and on the other hand how the powerless or the underdogs or the minorities could exert their will power through the paradigm of choices to win; 4) then comes the theory of Sri Aurobindo and his theory of democracy which intersects with John Rawls s theory of comprehensive doctrines and political justice. However, I must valorize the literary contribution of the book as well. The book has discussed literary authors like Amitav Ghosh, Jhumpa Lahiri and Toni Morrison whose novels embody in one way or another, different facets of the theory of "capability" and my engagement with literary authors of diaspora contributed to the second part of the title of the book.
