StephenNachmanovitchperformsandteachesinternationallyasanimprovisationalviolinist,andattheintersectionsofmusic,dance,theater,andmultimediaarts.HeistheauthorofFreePlay:ImprovisationinLifeandArt(Penguin,1990).Bornin1950,hestudiedatHarvardandtheUniversityofCalifornia,whereheearnedaPh.D.intheHistoryofConsciousnessforanexplorationofWilliamBlake.HismentorwastheanthropologistandphilosopherGregoryBateson.HehastaughtandlecturedwidelyintheUnitedStatesandabroadoncreativityandthespiritualunderpinningsofart.Inthe1970'shewasapioneerinfreeimprovisationonviolin,violaandelectricviolin.Hehaspresentedmasterclassesandworkshopsatmanyconservatoriesanduniversities,andhashadnumerousappearancesonradio,television,andatmusicandtheaterfestivals.Hehascollaboratedwithotherartistsinmediaincludingmusic,dance,theater,andfilm,andhasdevelopedprogramsmeldingart,music,literature,andcomputertechnology.Hehaspublishedarticlesinavarietyoffieldssince1966,andhascreatedcomputersoftwareincludingTheWorldMusicMenuandVisualMusicTonePainter.HeliveswithhiswifeandtwosonsinCharlottesville,Virginia.Heiscurrentlyperforming,recording,teaching,writing,andobsessedwiththeimprovisationalpossibilitiesoftheviolad'amore.
