I came across a small catalogue titled "Love" on display at a bookstore in the East Village. I entered the bookstore and learned about the artist Keith Haring. His visual language seems simple but powerful and direct. One could sense a logical and orderly manner controlling his expressions about love; at the same time, there was a sense of poetic timidness. That was the first time I sensed a connection between popular music and visual art. It seemed as if I had begun to understand contemporary art and discovered the similarities between their respective creative processes. The year 1999 marked a turning point in my music career: My fourth album titled "Made in China", recorded in Los Angeles, did not get the approval for release in China's mainland. This gave me an opportunity to reexamine my life. Maybe I had always hoped for a turning point like this, so I started to take painting lessons. After that, I travelled between Beijing and New York frequently, and I took courses at New York University to improve my English. In 2002, I decided to spend more time in New York. I was eager to make a drastic transformation: 1 realized that visual art was more suitable for me. Eventually I stayed in New York. My days were filled with hours at the studio and a few trips to the art supplies stores every week. I kept learning about how to use various materials and spent every weekend looking at art in museums, auction previews, art. fairs, and on the street. Such information nurtured me. Gradually, I built up my faith in becoming a serious professional artist, starting with my initial interest and moving towards establishing my own artistic style. I chose the word "love" as my visual language, and it was not an easy path. Keith Haring and Robert Indiana are the most well-known artists associated with this word. However, I believed that I would find my own way. "Love" to me means a brand new journey, just as it is for everyone. My "Love" series extended beyond paintings; I made installations with materials such as disposable chopsticks, old yarns, vintage doors, newspaper, flowers, metal, stones, and paints used in ancient murals. The ideas associated with these materials are combined with what I want to express, delineating the core theme "love" from the external visual effects to the inner spirit. "Love" is hardly a singular expression.
