　　气势磅礴的蒸汽机车喷吐着白色烟雾，牵引着长大的火车车厢、势不可挡地飞驰向前，这是铁路一出现就在人们心目中留下的雄伟形象。事实上18世纪下半叶，英国人瓦特(1736-1819)发明了蒸汽机，全世界的产业发生了巨大变化，人们把蒸汽机的出现看作是世界产业革命。但产业革命真正的急先锋却是铁路，不论是那个国家，在其工业化过程中铁路扮演着先驱者的重要角色，对这个国家的社会、经济飞速发展做出巨大的不可磨灭的贡献，时至今日，全世界有134个国家和地区拥有约115万千米的铁路，另外有113个城市拥有地铁1万千米以上，309个城市拥有轻轨4万4千千米，更为甚者高速铁路已在包括中国在内的20个国家和地区建成，而且发展进程“如火如荼”。如今，全世界90%以上的人口天天在使用铁路，离不开铁路，铁路的丰功伟绩不仅广为人们传诵，而且已在世界各国正式发行的硬币上得到突出的反映。世界硬币已有3千多年历史，但在十九世纪以前，硬币上的图案主要是君王、宗教或动物图腾，形式单一。只是从二十世纪开始，硬币图案才有了极大的拓展，对社会发展有巨大影响的政治、科学、艺术人物及各种社会事件的题材内容开始在硬币上得到反映。铁路作为十九世纪才问世的一种产业模式，在二十世纪的硬币上却在各种社会产业题材中独占鳌头，据不完全的统计，目前已有48个国家与地区相继发行了124种铁路主题硬币共183枚，而且设计精美，构思独特。为什么铁路的发展在人们心目中具有如此巨大的魅力呢，这与铁路创新过程中涌现出众多名人及传奇式事件有关，更与世界铁路经历了180多年高峰—低谷—高峰的发展，对世界各国的经济“腾飞”做出了历史性的贡献直接有关。
　　作者从事铁路科技工作四十多年，在本职工作之余，对收藏世界各国铁路专题的硬币情怀独钟。通过十几年的搜集、收藏、研究，对每一枚铁路题材的硬币，不仅在币面图案、文字及艺术表达形式上作查证、分析，更对它的发行背景、人物的生平、历史贡献、事件的前因后果及对社会重大影响作了深入研究。本书中作者挑选了在世界铁路硬币中有影响力并有深刻涵义的硬币95种作一图文并茂的介绍，希望读者阅读后，不仅对各国铁路的发展及贡献有一个生动的了解，又能通过小小硬币上精美的艺术作品的感染，增加对铁路硬币中蕴涵的艺术性的欣赏能力，从而萌发浓厚的兴趣，最终投入铁路硬币收藏队伍中来，这也是作者一个心愿。

【作者简介】

　　钱立新，浙江嘉兴人，研究员，博士生导师。中国铁道学会会员、中国钱币学会会员。1964年上海交通大学机车车辆与运输起重机械系铁道车辆专业毕业，历任中国铁道科学研究院研究实习员、助理研究员、副研究员、研究员。1981～1983年赴美国伊利诺理工大学及美国西北大学任访问学者、客座副教授。回国后一直从事铁路提速、重载、高速关键技术的研究与开发，曾获国家科技进步一等奖、二等奖、三等奖各一项，铁道部等部级科技进步一等奖三项，出版专著五册，其中主编的《世界高速铁路技术》2004年获第14届国家图书奖。1994年被授予国家有突出贡献中青年专家称号，1995年享受国务院特殊津贴。1984年曾全权代表中国参与筹建“国际重载铁路协会”并担任常务理事、曾任国际铁路联盟科技指导委员会委员，《中国铁道科学》主编。
　　工作之余对世界钱币的集藏有浓厚的兴趣，退休后更达痴迷的程度，尤其钟情于世界铁路币及人物币的积藏与研究探讨，除收藏了初具规模的铁路币、人物币外，近十年来陆续在《中国收藏(钱币)》、《铁道知识》和其他报刊上发表有关钱币收藏研讨的文章20余篇。2007年在中国收藏家协会，中国铁道学会主办的“‘动力时代’杯首届中国铁路文化收藏展”上展出了世界铁路钱币，荣获优秀收藏奖。
