和麦克尤恩、巴恩斯齐名的英国国民作家。1952年出生于加纳，毕业于牛津大学耶稣学院。英国皇家文学学会会员，获颁大英帝国官佐勋章、法兰西文学与艺术勋章。著有16部长篇小说，以及多部短篇小说集和剧作。作品多次入围布克奖和国际都柏林文学奖，并斩获科斯塔奖、毛姆奖、惠特布莱德小说奖、詹姆斯·泰特-布莱克纪念奖、约翰·里斯奖、《洛山矶时报》图书奖等多种文学奖项。曾任《格兰塔》第100期纪念刊客座主编。
