雷蒙德·卡佛1938年出生于俄勒冈州的克拉茨卡尼。他的第一本小说集《请你安静吗》（1977年获国家图书奖提名）之后，《当我们谈论爱情时，我们谈论的是什么》、《大教堂》（1984年获普利策奖提名）以及1988年入选美国艺术与文学学院的《我在呼唤》。1988年8月2日，他在完成《通往瀑布的新路》的诗歌后不久去世。
