1864年6月15日，狄更斯向小说家布尔沃先行披露了当时正在连载的《远大前程》结局。布尔沃读后表示，这样的结局可能会令读者失望，狄更斯遂改以另一个结局发表，结果大受欢迎，该版本便一直流传至今。然而，约翰．佛斯特、萧伯纳等文学名家在读过原始结局后，纷纷表示原先的安排其实更出色。
