SirArthurConanDoyle（I859-I93O）wasaScottishauthormostnotedforhisstoriesaboutthedetectiveSherlockHolmes，whicharegenerallyconsideredamajor:'innovationinthefieldofcrimefiction，andfortheadventuresofProfessorChallenger.Hewasaprolificwriterwhoseotherworksincludesciencefictionstories，historicalnovels，playsandromances，poetry，andnon-fiction.
Doylehimselfwasnotagoodexampleofrationalpersonality:hebelievedinfairiesandwasinterestedinoccultism.SherlockHolmesstorieshavebeentranslatedintomorethanfiftylanguages，andmadeintoplays，films，radioandtelevisionseries，amusicalcomedy，aballet，cartoons，comicbooks，andadvertisement.By1920Doylewasoneofthemosthighlypaidwritersintheworld.
