Alison Fell's enchanting tale spinning is at its best in this classic story of a young Scots lass,Annie, and the mysterious school bus driver, Lal. Set in a time when corporal punishment - the leather tawse - was still used in schools, and the history of the Highland clearances were being revisited by the need for water supplies and hydroelectricity, this short story brings to life the struggles of a small community fighting against the big interests who want to control their environment. In this, it has many parallels with todays society, and the romantic twist of Lal's elegiac search for his long lost love makes for a stunning finish. This is my favourite book by Alison Fell, a vastly under rated writer. I have read this book countless times since I first discovered it many years ago, and it never fails to draw me in. Children's fiction at it's very best.
