IzaakWalton,oneoftheearliestEnglishbiographerswhoisbestrememberedastheauthorofTheCompleatAngler,wasbornintheparishofSt.Mary's,atStafford,onAugust9,1593.Hisfather,GervaseWalton,wasaninnkeeperwhodiedwhentheboywasfive.BythetimeWaltonwastwentyhewaslivinginLondon,apprenticedtohisbrother-in-law,aprosperousclothier.HismarriagetoRachelFloud,arelativeofArchbishopThomasCranmer,in1626alliedhimwithaprominentclericalfamily,andasaparishioneratSt.Dunstan'sChurchWaltonbecameaclosefriendofitsvicar,JohnDonne.AmongWalton'searliestsurvivingliteraryeffortsisanelegywrittenin1633fortheinitialcollectionofDonne'spoems.Thepoet-clergymanwasthesubjectofthefirstofWalton'sgreatbiographicalessays:LifeofDonneservedastheprefacetothe1640editionoftheminister'ssermonsandwasfilledwithanecdotesandpersonalimpressions.OvertheyearsWalton'sloyaltytotheChurchofEngland,coupledwithhisgeniusforfriendship,inspiredhimtowritebiographiesoffourothereminenttheologians:SirHenryWotton(1651),RichardHooker(1665),GeorgeHerbert(1670),andDr.RobertSanderson(1678).EachisdistinguishedbytheintimacyandvivacitycharacteristicoftheLifeofDonne.ItislittlewonderthatSamuelJohnsonratedWalton'sfiveLivesamong'hismostfavouritebooks.'Walton'sreputationasabiographerisovershadowedbytheenduringpopularityofTheCompleatAngler.Firstpublishedin1653,duringtheCivilWarthatforcedWaltonandotherroyaliststofleeLondon,theworkismorethananengagingdiscourseontheartoffishing.Itreflectsathoughtful,sensitiveEnglishman'sabidingconcernwithleadingacontemplativelife.Indeed,manyhavereadWalton'suniquecelebrationofanglingthroughouttheEnglishcountrysideasaveiledsatireagainstCromwellandthePuritans.Fourrevisededitionsappearedintheauthor'slifetime,andTheCompleatAnglerhasenjoyedawidefollowingeversince.SamuelJohnsonpraisedthebookintheeighteenthcenturyasdidtheScottishphilosopherLordHome.Later,CharlesLambrecommendedTheCompleatAnglertoSamuelTaylorColeridge.'Itbreathestheveryspiritofinnocence,purity,andsimplicityofheart,'henoted.'Itwouldsweetenaman'stemperatanytimetoreadit;itwouldChristianiseeveryangry,discordantpassion;praymakeyourselfacquaintedwithit.'Waltonremainedactivewellintooldage.TheRestorationofCharlesIIin1660returnedmanyofhisfriendsintheAnglicanclergytopositionsofinfluence,andtheywerequicktoreciprocatetheactsofgoodwillhehaddisplayedduringCromwell'sreign.Followingthedeathofhissecondwifein1662,WaltonwasemployedasstewardtothebishopofWorcester.Atthebishop'sresidenceofFarnhamCastleinWincesterWaltoncontinuedtowriteandrevisehispublishedworks.In1676Waltonaskedayoungfollower,thepoetCharlesCotton,tofurnishasupplementonfly-fishingforthefiftheditionofTheCompleatAngler,andthetwopursuedtheprojectatacottageonthebanksoftheDoveRiverinDerbyshire.OnAugust9,1683,theinveterateanglermarkedhisninetiethbirthdaybydraftingawillandsecuringitwithasealgivenhimbyJohnDonne.IzaakWaltondiedthreemonthslateronDecember15,1683andwasburiedatWinchesterCathedral.
