MarkTwainwasbornSamuelLanghorneClemensinFlorida,Missouri,in1835,anddiedatRedding,Connecticutin1910.Inhispersonandinhispursuitshewasamanofextraordinarycontrasts.Althoughheleftschoolattwelvewhenhisfatherdied,hewaseventuallyawardedhonorarydegreesfromYaleUniversity,theUniversityofMissouri,andOxfordUniversity.Hiscareerencompassedsuchvariedoccupationsasprinter,Mississippiriverboatpilot,journalist,travelwriter,andpublisher.Hemadefortunesfromhiswritingbuttowardtheendofhislifehehadtoresorttolecturetourstopayhisdebts.Hewashot-tempered,profane,andsentimental—andalsopessimistic,cynical,andtorturedbyself-doubt.Hisnostalgiahelpedproducesomeofhisbestbooks.HelivesinAmericanlettersasagreatartist,thewriterwhomWilliamDeanHowellscalled“theLincolnofourliterature.”
