Urban landscape includes spaces that are open and public. Theymay or may not incorporate natural elements such as green areas andaquatic zones, or provide space for leisure activities and masspublic events. They are often the physical nexus of neighborhoodidentity. The vital importance of urban public open spaces can beappreciated when we observe the myriad of uses that people make ofthese places. Motivated by the desire to enjoy the environment, they take long relaxing strolls or walk the dog, practice sports, and attend events, among other activities. As we shall see, thedifferent types of spaces can be categorized by social typologiesbased on age, gender, and physical and mental ability. Furthermore, the projects included in this book show that accessibility andlighting are issues tackled by designers to allow people to movesafely around public open spaces. Urban spaces are beneficial tosocieties at a social level since they are open to everyone, fostering community spirit. They foster the development of childrenthrough outdoor activities that involve playing, running, andinteracting. More specifically, green urban spaces provide numerouseducational opportunities and contribute to maintainingbiodiversity of existing natural habitats. And ultimately, theyimprove the conditions of the urban environment by reducingpollution and utilizing sustainable practices such as watermanagement. Urban areas can also benefit from the economic growthengendered by urban parks and gardens, as they add value toneighborhood real estate and attract new businesses and tourism. However, open public spaces are coming increasingly under pressurein cities as a consequence of overdevelopment and urban sprawl. Ascities grow denser, we see our connection with nature grow weaker. While it is difficult to create new green open areas in thebuilt-up urban fabric, city governments—in collaboration withlandscape architects, urbanists, and experts in various fields—canimplement strategies that bring sustainable urban regeneration tothe fore. With the lack of available land, which makes it difficultto create new open spaces, these efforts are often centered in therecuperation of existing infrastructures to improve city dwellers’quality of life. Examples shown in this book illustrate how citiesare transforming derelict structures into parks, restoring naturalhabitats polluted by many years of industrial occupation, andintegrating ports and waterfronts into the urban fabric toreestablish the connection between the city and the water. Theseprojects are often implemented along with public education of theenvironmental value of urban spaces, which in turn will improvepublic health and well-being. It is obvious that cities willcontinue to grow, but we can change our approach to the integrationof nature in cities and find ways to develop that don’t distancecity dwellers from nature. The focus on reestablishing a connectionwith nature does not imply the slowing or restricting ofdevelopment. On the contrary, if well considered, it may improveneighborhoods and encourage reinvestment. The structure of thisbook is based on a typology that reflects the variety of publicopen spaces that make up the urban fabric. Needless to say, thistypology is only one approach to organize the selected projects. They are gardens, parks, linear parks, and plazas like the“Promenade of Light” by Tonkin Liu, an exemplary urban regenerationscheme that has resurrected a tree-lined promenade in a neglectedarea in the city of London. Consulted users have expressed thatthey feel safer on the promenade and that the improved streetscapehas benefited local business. Other projects include public spacesaround institutional developments such as “The City Dune” by SLA, agreen and open foyer for the public and the employees of the SEBBank in Copenhagen. Public spaces around residential developmentsare represented in this book, also. One example is the “CentralPlaza for the Katzenbach Housing” in Zurich by Robin WinogrondLandscape Architect. This project is part of a large, high-densityhousing complex with landscaped courtyards incorporatingvegetation, sand and water, play elements, and seating.Playgrounds, zoos, botanical gardens, and cemeteries are communityassets that contribute to the quality of life. This categoryincludes projects such as “Bahndeckel” in Munich, a new open spaceand playground designed by Topotek 1 in collaboration
