Scientists are now studying a new field of research calledpsychoimmunology. It is based on the idea that people who aredepressed or have a lot of stressare more likely to becomesick.Researchers have recently found a connectionbetween diseasesand stressful situations. To test this theory’psychoim-munologistsare trying to find a l ink between the brain and the immunesystem. The immune system in our bodies fights the bacteria andviruses which causedisease. Therefore, whether or not we are l ikelyto get various diseasesdepends on how well our immune systemworks.Biologists used to think thatthe immune system was aseparate, independent part of our bodies.Recently, however, they havefound that our brain can affect our immune system.Thisdiscoveryindicates that there may be a connection between emotionalfactors, such as stress or depression, and illness.Although manydoctors in the past suspected a connection between emotionalfactorsand disease’they had no proof.Scientists have onlyrecentlydiscovered how the brain and the immune systemfunction. Before this,no onecould see a link between them.As aresult, medical science never seriouslyconsidered the idea thatpsychological factors could cause disease.Several recent studiesshowed a connection between stress andillness.Forexample, researchers went to an American military schoolto study thestudents.By studying the cadets’blood, they found thatmany were infectedwith a virus which causes mononuclepsis,a commonglandular disease.Of theinfected students.only 5 percent actuallybecame ill.The sick cadets had a lotof academic pressure and wantedto achieve, but they were not very goodstudents. In a similarstudy, researchers studied a group of student nurses.
