This tower responds to highly restrictiveguidelines which required maintenanceof sunlight penetration to an urban park, control of materials, fenestration sizes, andthe retention of some historic buildings tothe rear of the site. The proposal won alimited competition for the development. The building is designed as three steppedforms scaled down toward the park witha cupola at the park interface. The concept involved creation of a formsympathetic to the historic Rocks area. The formal details, however, such asentablatures and column capitals, weredeveloped as exaggerated contemporaryelements, thereby avoiding historicreplication while, from a distance, appearing consistent with surroundingbuildings. Elevational treatment of thethree levels was subtly varied betweenbase, middle and tower as a meansof delineating scale. The decks weretreated as roof gardens reflecting theneighbouring urban park.
