In accordance with Liu Bei s orders， Wu Ban s soldiersapproached and challenged the enemy to battle. They showedtheir contempt by throwing off their armor and clothing and moving about with a complete lack of caution， naked as the daythey were born. The Wu generals Xu Sheng and Ding Feng cameto the commander s tent to plead to be allowed to fight. Lu Xunonly smiled and said the display was exactly designed to entice usinto fight. He urged them to be patient reassuring them that theoutcome would be seen in three days.But on the third day the officers were assembled at a look-out point from where they could see that the Wu army haddecamped. When a Shu ambush appeared， the Wu generals werefinally convinced.The First Ruler sent orders for his navy forces to make hastedown the river and take up station along the riverbanks deep inWu territory Huang Quan spoke against this， but Liu Bei didn tlisten.Ihe Wei spies duly reported these events to the Wei Ruler.Cao Pi laughed aloud when he heard the details of the long lineof camps and the encampments among the trees and all the restofit. "Liu Bei is going to be defeated，" he said. He also stated， "Ifhe is successful， Lu Xun willlead all his forces westward into theWestern Land of Rivers， and his country will be defenseless.
Lu Xun led the army to the battlefront. Veterans Han Dangand Zhou Tai showed their unhappiness at his appointment byonly supporting Lu Xun in a half-hearted manner. Ihey also askedLu Xun to rescue Sun Huan. Lu Xun said， "Ihere is no need to goto his aid. When the Shu are broken， he can walk free." Next daygeneral orders were issued for the defense and prohibitions wereissued against giving battle. The officers preferred to attackinsteadof defending to the last. Lu Xun， drew his sword and shouted， "Ishall put all who disobey to death!"Hearing that Lu Xun was the author of the villainous andcrafty plan to attackjingzhou， Liu Bei gave orders to advance. ButMa Liang protested and dissuaded him from underestimating theenemy However， Liu Bei，looking down upon Lu Xun， confirmedthe order to move forward， and they attacked the passes and fordsand engaged the enemy wherever they were.The soldiers of the Shu Army shouted all sorts of abuseand sought to humiliate their opponents， but Lu Xun took nonotice and bade his troops to hold their ground The weather wasscorching.
