DonaldCrewsgrewupinNewark,NewJersey,andsaysthatallthroughhischildhoodthemembersofhisfamilywerealwaysdoingsomethingwiththeirhands.Hewasalwaysdrawingpictures.Now,intheoldfarmhousewhereheliveswithhiswife,thenotedauthorandillustratorAnnJonas,DonaldCrewsisstilldrawingpictures.

AftergraduatingfromNewYorkCity'sCooperUnion,Mr.Crewsspentthreeyearsworkingasadesigner.HewasassistantartdirectorofDancemagazine,onthestaffofasmalldesignstudio,anddidfreelanceworkasabook-jacketdesigner.Butin1962hewasinductedintotheArmy,andforatimehisartisticpursuitsweresetaside.Astheendofhiseighteen-monthmilitarystintinGermanyapproached,heassignedhimselftothetaskofwritingandillustratingachildren'sbooktoaddtohisportfolio.TheresultwasthebrilliantconceptbookWeRead:AtoZ(Harper&Row,1967),which,nearlytwentyyearslater,wasreissuedbyGreenwillowBooks.TenBlackDots,acountingbook,camenext,andthenseveralbooksforwhichhedidillustrationsonly.Buttheturningpointcamein1978,whenGreenwillowpublishedFreightTrain,apicturebookinspiredbyMr.Crews'schildhoodtraintripsfromNewarktovisithisgrandmotherinFlorida.ItwasnamedaCaldecottHonorBook.Sincethen,Mr.Crewshascreatedseveralotherhighlyacclaimedpicturebooks(includingTruck,a1981CalclecottHonorBook),allpaintedintheflat,cleancolorsandbright,unambiguousshapesthatarethehallmarksofhisstrikinggraphics.
