钱锺书先生一生酷爱读书，每读一书必作笔记，留下了数量惊人的从未面世的读书笔记，由杨绛女士保存至今。外文笔记是其中数量、价值可观的一部分，原稿共211本，约计35000页。包括英语、法语、德语、意大利语、西班牙语、拉丁语、希腊语等七种语言，所涉题材包括哲学、语言学、文学、文学批评、文艺理论、心理学、人类学等各个领域。 这些笔记将由商务印书馆影印出版，名为《钱锺书手稿集外文笔记》。全书分六辑，48分册。现已出版辑，全三册。辑（全三册）是钱锺书在欧洲留学时所作的读书笔记，书写时间从1935年至1938年。主要包括英、法、德、意四种语言。内容有对艾略特、洛夫乔伊、简奥斯丁、查尔斯狄更斯、艾兹拉庞德、古尔蒙、阿尔封斯都德、巴尔扎克、福楼拜、维克多雨果、弗里德里希罗高、但丁等人作品的摘录，及钱先生读书时所作的札记。辑的先期推出，将为全面展示钱锺书先生在外国文学及相关人文社科领域的研究成果拉开序幕。
