JaneAustenwasbornonDecember16,1775atSteventonnearBasingstoke,theseventhchildoftherectoroftheparish.ShelivedwithherfamilyatSteventonuntiltheymovedtoBathwhenherfatherretiredin1801.Afterhisdeathin1805,shemovedaroundwithhermother;in1809,theysettledinChawton,nearAlton,Hampshire.Heresheremained,exceptforafewvisitstoLondon,untilinMay1817shemovedtoWinchestertobenearherdoctor.ThereshediedonJuly18,1817.
AsagirlJaneAustenwrotestories,includingburlesquesofpopularromances.Herworkswereonlypublishedaftermuchrevision,fournovelsbeingpublishedinherlifetime.TheseareSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814)andEmma(1816).Twoothernovels,NorthangerAbbeyandPersuasion,werepublishedposthumouslyin1818withabiographicalnoticebyherbrother,HenryAusten,thefirstformalannouncementofherauthorship.Persuasionwaswritteninaraceagainstfailinghealthin1815-16.Shealsolefttwoearliercompositions,ashortepistolarynovel,LadySusan,andanunfinishednovel,TheWatsons.Atthetimeofherdeath,shewasworkingonanewnovel,Sanditon,afragmentarydraftofwhichsurvives.
