Iamoftenaskedatthetimeofpublicationofaneweditionpreciselyhowmuchofthematerialisappearingforthefirsttime.Thisisadifficultquestiontoanswerquantitatively.Myeducatedguessisthat30percentoftheinformationisneworhasbeenmodifiedsignificantlyfromthatcontainedinthethirdedition，thatthenumberofreferenceshasbeenexpandedby25to35percent（withemphasisgiventopertinentrecentpublications），andthatnewillustrationsrepresent25to30percentofthetotalnumberappearinginthisedition.Withregardtotheillustrativematerial，thenewfiguresunderscoretheincreasingimportanceofMRimagingasavehicleforinvestigationofthesediseases.
