RoaldDahl(1916-1990)wasborninWalesofNorwegianparents.HespenthischildhoodinEnglandand,atageeighteen,wenttoworkfortheShellOilCompanyinAfrica.WhenWorldWarIIbrokeout,hejoinedtheRoyalAirForceandbecameafighterpilot.Attheageoftwenty-sixhemovedtoWashington,D.C.,anditwastherehebegantowrite.Hisfirstshortstory,whichrecountedhisadventuresinthewar,wasboughtbyTheSaturdayEveningPost,andsobeganalongandillustriouscareer.
