The Saddle Club's membership consists of Carole, Stevie, and Lisa, a trio of horse crazy, middle school girls. The Saddle Club members appear in other short novels but each story is independent of the other. In this story, Carole has to cope with the loss of a beautiful stallion, Cobalt, while Stevie and Lisa try to uncover the history of the stable owner Max. Carole sees Cobalt's accident and death as a result of neglect and foolishness from the horse's owner. Carole considers never riding horses again. As she tries to come to terms with the horse's death, Stevie and Lisa explore in town for juicy information about the former owner of the stable. Their explorations prove mildly amusing, albeit a bit outdated. This description of "mildly amusing albeit a bit outdated" could describe the entire novel; many of the characters and events feel as though they took place in the fifties and not today. The story would be stronger if it took more time exploring the loss of a beloved animal or the knowledge horse riders need. In spite of this lack, middle school readers, particularly girls, could find comfort with the continuing adventures of these three horse riders
