作者：（英国）约翰·高尔斯华绥（John Galsworthy） 约翰·高尔斯华绥（1867—1933），是英国小说家、戏剧家。他出身在一个富裕的资产阶级家庭，父亲是伦敦律师。他曾在牛津大学攻读法律，1890年获得律师营业执照开始执行律师业务，但不久就放弃律师工作而从事文学创作。1897年，高尔斯华绥发表处女作《天涯海角》，但一直到1904年《岛国的法利赛人》出版，才引起社会注意。1906年，高尔斯华绥完成长篇小说《有产业的人》，小说获得广泛好评，他也因此而被公认为英国流作家，并被认为是英国文学中现实主义传统的继承者。高尔斯华绥是个多产作家，在二十多年的创作生涯中，几乎每年写一部小说和一部剧本。1932年，高尔斯华绥“因其描述的艺术——这种艺术在《福尔赛世家》中达到高峰”而获得诺贝尔文学奖。高尔斯华绥的重要作品有：长篇小说三部曲《福尔赛世家》（1922）由《有产业的人》（1906）、《骑虎》（1920）、《出租》（1921）组成，三部曲《现代喜剧》（1928）由《白猿》（1926）、《银匙》（1926）、《天鹅之歌》（1928）组成，三部曲《尾声》（1934）由《女侍》（1931）、《开花的荒野》（1932）、《河那边》（1933）组成。作品以l9世纪后期和20世纪初期的英国社会为背景，描写了英国资产阶级的社会和家庭生活，以及盛极而衰的历史。他的作品语言简练，形象生动，讽刺辛辣。他的主要戏剧作品有《银匣》（1906）、《斗争》（1909）、《正义》（1910）、《鸽子》（1912）、《皮肤游戏》（1920）、《忠诚》（1922）、《逃跑》（1926）等。
