Euripides,theyoungestofthethreegreatAthenianplaywrights,wasbornaround485BCofafamilyofgoodstanding.Hefirstcompetedinthedramaticfestivalsin455BC,comingonlythird;hisrecordofsuccessinthetragiccompetitionsislowerthanthatofeitherAeschylusorSophocles.Thereisatraditionthathewasunpopular,evenarecluse;wearetoldthathecomposedpoetryinacavebythesea,nearSalamis.Whatisclearfromcontemporaryevidence,however,isthataudienceswerefascinatedbyhisinnovativeandoftendisturbingdramas.Hisworkwascontroversialalreadyinhislifetime,andhehimselfwasregardedasa‘clever’poet,associatedwithphilosophersandotherintellectuals.TowardstheendofhislifehewenttoliveatthecourtofArchelaus,kingofMacedon.Itwasduringhistimetherethathewrotewhatmanyconsiderhisgreateswork,theBacchae.WhennewsofhisdeathreachedAthensinearly406BC,Sophoclesappearedpubliclyinmourningforhim.Euripidesisthoughttohavewrittenaboutninety-twoplays,ofwhichseventeentragediesandonesatyr-playknowntobehissurvive;theotherplaywhichisattributedtohim,theRhesus,mayinfactbebyalaterhand.
