Theirhomesweresodistant,andthecirclesinwhichtheymovedsodistinct,asalmosttoprecludethemeansofeverhearingofeachother’sexistenceduringtheelevenfollowingyears,oratleasttomakeitverywonderfultoSirThomas,thatMrs.Norrisshouldeverhaveitinherpowertotellthem,asshenowandthendidinanangryvoice,thatFannyhadgotanotherchild.Bytheendofelevenyears,however,Mrs.Pricecouldnolongeraffordtocherishprideorresentment,ortoloseoneconnectionthatmightpossiblyassisther.Alargeandstillincreasingfamily,anhusbanddisabledforactiveservice,butnotthelessequaltocompanyandgoodliquor,andaverysmallincometosupplytheirwants,madehereagertoregainthefriendsshehadsocarelesslysacrificed;andsheaddressedLadyBertraminaletterwhichspokesomuchcontritionanddespondence,suchasuperfluityofchildren,andsuchawantofalmosteverythingelse,ascouldnotbutdisposethemalltoareconciliation.Shewaspreparingforherninthlying-in,andafterbewailingthecircumstance,andimploringtheircountenanceassponsorstotheexpectedchild,shecouldnotconcealhowimportantshefelttheymightbetothefuturemaintenanceoftheeightalreadyinbeing.Hereldestwasaboyoftenyearsold,afinespiritedfellowwholongedtobeoutintheworld;butwhatcouldshedo?WasthereanychanceofhisbeinghereafterusefultoSirThomasintheconcernsofhisWestIndianproperty?Nosituationwouldbebeneathhim––orwhatdidSirThomasthinkofWoolwich?orhowcouldaboybesentouttotheEast?
Theletterwasnotunproductive.Itre-establishedpeaceandkindness.SirThomassentfriendlyadviceandprofessions,LadyBertramdispatchedmoneyandbaby-linen,andMrs.Norriswrotetheletters.
Suchwereitsimmediateeffects,andwithinatwelvemonthamoreimportantadvantagetoMrs.Priceresultedfromit.Mrs.Norriswasoftenobservingtotheothers,thatshecouldnotgetherpoorsisterandherfamilyoutofherhead,andthatmuchastheyhadalldoneforher,sheseemedtobewantingtodomore:andatlengthshecouldnotbutownittobeherwish,thatpoorMrs.Priceshouldberelievedfromthechargeandexpenseofonechildentirelyoutofhergreatnumber.‘Whatiftheywereamongthemtoundertakethecareofhereldestdaughter,agirlnownineyearsold,ofanagetorequiremoreattentionthanherpoormothercouldpossiblygive?Thetroubleandexpenseofittothem,wouldbenothingcomparedwiththebenevolenceoftheaction.’LadyBertramagreedwithherinstantly.‘Ithinkwecannotdobetter,’saidshe,‘letussendforthechild.’
SirThomascouldnotgivesoinstantaneousandunqualifiedaconsent.Hedebatedandhesitated;––itwasaseriouscharge;––agirlsobroughtupmustbeadequatelyprovidedfor,ortherewouldbecrueltyinsteadofkindnessintakingherfromherfamily.Hethoughtofhisownfourchildren––ofhistwosons––ofcousinsinlove,&c.;––butnosoonerhadhedeliberatelybeguntostatehisobjections,thanMrs.Norrisinterruptedhimwithareplytothemallwhetherstatedornot.
