PierreBoullewasborninAvignon,Francein1912.Heoriginallytrainedasanengineer,butin1936wenttoMalaysiaasarubberplanter.In1939hewascalledupintheFrenchforcesinIndochina.WhenFrancefellduringWorldWarII,hefledtoSingapore,wherehejoinedtheFreeFrenchMission.AftertheJapaneseinvasion,hewassentviaRangoonandtheBurmaRoadtoYunnantoestablishcontactwithKuomintangforces.HeinfiltratedIndochinaasaguerillawherehewascapturedin1943.Heescapedin1944,waspickedupbyaBritishplane,andservedintheSpecialForcesinCalcuttafortherestofthewar.

HisfirstnovelpublishedintheUnitedStateswasTheBridgeontheRiverKwai.ItwasawardedthePrixSte.BeuveinFrance,andledtothemotionpicturethatreceivedanamazingsevenAcademyAwards.Heconsideredhissubsequentbooks,ofwhichPlanetoftheApesisthemostwell-known,tobesocialfantasies.
