　　Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) has been called one of the greatshapers of popular culture and the modern imagination. Among hermore famous works are Jamaica Inn, The Scapegoat, Rebecca, and theshort story "The Birds," all of which were subsequently made intofilms, the latter two directed by Alfred Hitchcock. She lived formany years in Cornwall, England, and in 1969 became Dame Daphne duMaurier.
