KENNETH GRAHAME (1859.3-1932.7) born inEdinburgh, Scotland. He is famous for the classicsof children's literature The Wind in the Willows.
When Kenneth was barely one year old hisfather obtained the post of Sheriff of Argyll, andthe family moved there. Kenneth loved the sea andwas happy there, but when he was 5, his motherdied. His father then had a drinking problemand gave the four children over care to GrannyIngles, the children's grandmother.
They lived in the village of Cookham inBerkshire. "The Mount" were introduced to theriverside and boating by their uncle, DavidIngles. This delightful ambiance, particularlyQuarry Wood and the River Thames, inspiredthe setting for The Wind in the Willows.
On Grahame's retirement, he returned toCookham with his family where he had lived asa child. He turned the bedtime stories he toldAlastair into his masterpiece.
Grahame died in Pangbourne, Berkshire, in1932. He is buried in Holywell Cemetery, Oxford.
